Portfolio optimization and transformation is the next logical step following a full IT Application Portfolio Assessment. The W Group practitioners create comprehensive context diagrams of the current application environment by mapping all applications, data stores, and relationships between core modules. In concert with the portfolio scoring results the context diagrams become the foundation for the transformation roadmap workshops. Working closely with our client’s applications team, The W Group will create a detailed application roadmap or “flight plan” for the entire application portfolio or key subset as directed by the client. The end result is a full view of the “current state”, the “desired state”, and the gaps in between. Each module will be labeled with the following transformation target:
- Application still appropriate
- Application should be enhanced
- Application should be upgraded
- Application should be replaced or merged
- Application should be retired
- Application is a good candidate for offshore support if not currently performed offshore
A financial model is also developed, demonstrating support costs associated with both the current and projected desired states. In most cases, the savings associated with a transformed environment can fund all or a significant portion of an application refresh. A fully transformed and optimized application environment requires significantly less overhead to support—almost always guaranteeing savings.
